Challenge
Create an intuitive yet compelling physical interface that could effectively represent the complex concept of multiverse exploration
“Bobo Ko’s Cosmic Adventure” is an immersive interactive installation that invites participants to explore multiple universes through a unique physical interface. The installation combines projection mapping, depth sensing technology, and creative storytelling to create a magical journey through various cosmic realms.
The primary challenge was to create an intuitive yet compelling physical interface that could effectively represent the complex concept of multiverse exploration. We needed to develop a system that would seamlessly blend physical interaction with digital visualization while maintaining a sense of wonder and discovery. Additionally, the installation needed to balance sophisticated technology with an accessible user experience that would engage visitors of all ages.
Strategy
Implement a depth-sensitive elastic interface that responds to physical touch, creating a direct connection between the user's actions and the digital cosmos
Our approach focused on creating a tactile, intuitive interaction method that would feel natural while producing visually stunning results. We chose to implement a depth-sensitive elastic interface that responds to physical touch, creating a direct connection between the user’s actions and the digital cosmos. The strategy emphasized creating varied and dynamic content across different universe designs to ensure each interaction feels unique and memorable.
Solution
A rear-projection interactive installation that tracks participant movement across an elastic fabric surface through depth-sensing technology, creating a responsive and immersive experience
The installation consists of several integrated components:
- A circular metal frame supporting a white elastic fabric that serves as both an interaction surface and projection screen
- A short-throw rear-projection system displaying dynamic cosmic visualizations
- Depth sensors that accurately track user interaction points and pressure levels
- A sophisticated visual system featuring eight distinct universe themes, including geometric, illustrative, constellation, smiley face, candy, strawberry, and psychedelic universes
- Dynamic programming that varies celestial body sizes, quantities, orbital speeds, and rotation patterns with each visit
- A central “solar system” hub that serves as a home base for explorers
Result
Naturally understand and enjoy the pressure-based interaction
The installation has successfully created an engaging and imaginative experience that brings the concept of multiverse exploration to life.
Users naturally understand and enjoy the pressure-based interaction, spending significant time exploring different universes and discovering various combinations of cosmic elements.
The installation effectively communicates the story of Bobo Ko while providing an entertaining and memorable experience for visitors.
Insight
Combining familiar tactile sensations with abstract visual representations can create powerful emotional connections and enhance user engagement.
“Bobo Ko’s Cosmic Adventure” demonstrates how physical interaction design can bridge the gap between complex concepts and accessible experiences.
The project reveals that combining familiar tactile sensations with abstract visual representations can create powerful emotional connections and enhance user engagement.
The success of the varied universe designs shows that randomization and diversity in content can significantly extend the replay value of interactive installations while maintaining user interest through multiple interactions.
