"Out Painting" merges generative AI with interactive art, allowing visitors to trigger AI-generated expansions of traditional artworks through physical interaction, creating a bridge between classical and digital artistic expression.

Challenge
Limited wall space and processing times of AI image generation
We faced two significant technical challenges that required fundamental rethinking of the installation’s design. The primary challenge emerged from spatial constraints that affected the AI generation quality – the originally planned three-painting configuration proved problematic as the limited wall space forced the artworks to be placed too close together, compromising the quality of the AI-generated extensions. The second major challenge involved the inherent latency of real-time AI image generation, with processing times of 15-30 seconds per image creating an unacceptable delay in the interactive experience.

Strategy
Transforming middle space from a hanging point into a deliberate focal area that enhanced the overall composition
Our approach focused on optimizing both the physical layout and technical implementation to maintain the artistic vision while ensuring a smooth user experience. We strategically redesigned the installation from three to two painting points, creating a more focused and effective viewing experience.
To address the latency issues, we developed a pre-generation strategy that would maintain the sense of AI creativity and randomness while eliminating wait times. This included careful consideration of the middle space between paintings, transforming it from a hanging point into a deliberate focal area that enhanced the overall composition.

A projection system that seamlessly blends the original artworks with their AI-generated extensions
The installation integrates several key components:
- Two designated mounting points optimally spaced for maximum AI generation effectiveness
- A curated collection of pre-generated AI expansions for each possible painting combination
- RFID sensors to detect painting placement and trigger corresponding visualizations
- A central focal point that guides visitor attention to the generated expansions
- A projection system that seamlessly blends the original artworks with their AI-generated extensions

The modified design successfully achieved its artistic and interactive goals while overcoming the initial technical constraints. The two-painting configuration proved more effective than the original three-painting design, creating clearer sight lines and more impressive AI-generated expansions.
The pre-generation approach eliminated wait times while maintaining the element of surprise and creativity that was central to the installation’s concept. Visitors engaged meaningfully with the artwork, experiencing the joy of discovery as they explored different painting combinations and their resulting expansions.

“Out Painting” demonstrates how technical limitations can lead to more refined artistic solutions when approached creatively. The project reveals that sometimes less is more – reducing the number of interactive elements actually enhanced the overall experience.
Additionally, the success of the pre-generated content strategy shows that perceived real-time generation can be as effective as actual real-time generation when properly implemented, suggesting new possibilities for balancing technological capabilities with user experience in interactive art installations.
