“PIS Podcast” is a podcast produced by the Student Association of the Interdisciplinary Program of Humanities and Technology at National Sun Yat-sen University. The program introduces courses, faculty, and the learning environment while inviting startup teams to share their experiences.
Episode 1: Startup Story – Luxmin (Part 1)
Starting a Business: Challenging but Achievable!
For those interested in entrepreneurship or light-based art, listen to how the Luxmin team from S!Lab Entrepreneurship Laboratory utilizes lighting technology in their creative work.
Does a Startup Need a Large Team?
Not necessarily – shared vision is what matters most! Luxmin began with three founding members: a graduate student now in his second year of Electrical Engineering at NSYSU, and two friends from undergraduate and high school. They divided responsibilities between technical development and project management.
The Entrepreneurial Catalyst – Professor Ming-Ren You’s Course!
The initial spark came from the “Entrepreneurship Lecture Series” taught by Professor Ming-Ren You. This course helped develop early concepts combining technical expertise with a passion for projection mapping. The timing aligned perfectly with Professor Ju-Mei Hsieh’s establishment of S!Lab.
The Origin of Luxmin – Creating with Light
The name Luxmin combines “Lumin” (the root word for light) with UX (user experience), reflecting our mission to use light as a medium for creating interactive experiences and visual effects that enhance user engagement.
Most Memorable Project – Venturing Beyond Comfort Zones
Drawing inspiration from regular exploration of others’ works and technical implementations, the team discovered conductive ink technology. Impressed by its potential, they developed it into a unique project that pushed their creative boundaries.
Recent Project: Chrome Dinosaur – Merging Light Art with Marketing
The project emerged from our evolving direction toward interactive marketing solutions. When quantifiable marketing metrics proved challenging for retail implementations, we pivoted to focus on pure gaming experiences. Using our existing pose recognition technology, we reimagined a retro game for modern interaction.
The team’s vision extends to projecting virtual images in physical spaces, incorporating human interaction to create more immersive, context-rich experiences that integrate both space and participants.
Episode 1: Startup Story – Luxmin (Part 2)
“Every Journey Begins with a First Step” – How Did Luxmin Start?
Our team lead shares how he and his partners found their inspiration through internships and various activities, discovering their passions and continuing to develop their expertise in these areas.
Why Partner with the Humanities and Technology Lab?
S!Lab provides essential entrepreneurial energy and resources. Professor Ju-Mei adapts her guidance to match different situations and ideas. Unlike the university’s startup containers, S!Lab assists at an earlier stage, providing a space for ideation and consultation.
How to Find Your Future Direction?
Our team lead reflects that when he first entered university, he didn’t have a clear vision of his future path. He encourages junior students not to limit themselves. While maintaining focus on their major studies, they should feel empowered to explore and experiment in other fields.
Advice for Students Interested in This Field
University education may not provide all the necessary information, so developing strong research skills is crucial. While the technical foundations are often straightforward, the key lies in creating unique combinations using these basic technologies in ways others might not consider.
The language is professional yet accessible, maintaining the informative nature of the original content while being appropriate for a broader audience.
