NSYSU Digital Sports Festival: Interactive Chrome Dinosaur Game Brings New Dimension to Athletic Competition
While traditional sports events unfold under the sun, an innovative digital competition has emerged indoors. The Luxmin team from S!Lab Entrepreneurship Laboratory has launched an interactive Chrome Dinosaur obstacle course, bringing a technological twist to the university’s sports festival.
Using advanced webcam detection and AI pose recognition technology, the installation transforms the iconic Chrome Dinosaur game into a physical experience. Players control the dinosaur through actual jumping and crouching movements, dodging pterodactyls and cacti obstacles in real-time. The system immediately displays scores and rankings, creating an engaging competitive atmosphere that has attracted over 50 participants in a single day.
Hsien-Chang Hou, a graduate student from NSYSU’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Luxmin team member, explains their choice of the pixelated dinosaur character: “Our team’s appreciation for retro pixel art games, combined with the Chrome Dinosaur’s simple yet engaging gameplay, made it perfect for showcasing AI pose recognition technology.” Drawing from his VR gaming industry experience, Hou developed this interactive installation to gauge market interest and collect valuable user experience data.
Associate Professor Ju-Mei Hsieh, the S!Lab advisor from the Interdisciplinary Program of Humanities and Technology, notes the project’s market potential, drawing parallels with the surge in fitness technology popularity during the pandemic. She emphasizes how this initiative provides students with valuable real-world implementation experience while fostering an innovative startup community within NSYSU.
The “Luxmin x S!Lab Chrome Dinosaur Reality Game” runs until March 18th, operating daily from 10 AM to 5 PM on the 10th floor of the Library and Information Building. Live rankings are updated on Instagram (@luxmin.art), with participants eligible for prize drawings and top performers receiving special awards.
The event has successfully bridged generational gaps, with both students and faculty enthusiastically participating during break periods. Beyond providing an alternative sports day experience, the initiative showcases NSYSU students’ entrepreneurial achievements and innovative capabilities.
